Simple ideas to store your passwords securely and get the most out of your password manager.
A cloud password manager concentrates the passwords of millions of people in one place, which makes it an attractive target. With a local password manager like Vault256, you can store your passwords on your local PC, AES-256 encrypted, and you decide where to back them up. The trade-off is that you're also responsible for keeping copies of the file and your recovery codes.
Use a long phrase instead of a single word: four or five unrelated words, with a number or symbol. It's easier to remember and harder to guess than a short, complex password. Don't use it anywhere else: it will be the only strong password you need to memorize, because your password manager remembers all the others.
AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) is an encryption standard and 256 is its key size in bits. AES-256 encryption encrypts and decrypts data efficiently and, in the GCM mode Vault256 uses, guarantees both confidentiality and integrity: if anyone tampers with your vault file, decryption detects it. Recognized as one of the most secure encryption algorithms available today, 256-bit encryption is one of the strongest ways to protect sensitive data; trying every combination isn't feasible with today's technology. In practice, the weak point is almost always the master password, not the encryption.
